Network Experience
Bruce has been both formally trained and self-taught on many Cisco systems. He researched and installed company-wide infrastructure for a business with up to 46 branches nationwide.
Multiple company acquisitions meant merging multiple networking and hardware platforms together. He has a wide range of knowledge about many aspects of networking, from wiring to WLAN, dedicated circuits to WAN and SONET. |

- Analyze sites to determine network, phone, cooling, electrical requirements and other physical planning (site surveys)
- Establish budget for network hardware requirements
- Negotiate prices with all hardware, service and circuit vendors
- Manage SMART NET maintenance contracts and service calls
- Analyze proposed new applications or traffic volumes to determine the effect
- on network resources and make recommendations
- Coordinate with team members to complete projects and resolve issues
- Propose network changes for future improvements
- Report status on current projects to management
Network Administration
- Configure ASA firewall (ASDM or IOS), IronPort Proxy server, routers and switches
- Manage IP address assignment and documentation
- Create subnets, assign static IP addresses, set DHCP ranges and DHCP reserved IPs
- Create VISIO diagrams of networks and floor plans of facilities for documentation
- Document all wiring closets and demarcs with photos and use them for remote troubleshooting
- Update IOS in Cisco routers and switches
- Administer DHCP, BOOTP, DNS services
- Troubleshoot and resolve network issues
- Provide user assistance using LogMeIn, RDP, UltraVNC or VNC
Wide Area Network (WAN) Administration
- Manage WAN connections, including CenturyLink PRN, Frame relay and point-to-point T1
- Manage leased line specifications and provisioning from LEC or CLEC
- Make channel assignments on SONET ring for customer provided access, if required (see SONET below)
- Manage point-to-point T1 and wireless connections to provide network access to nearby facilities
- Configure routers for MPLS, Frame relay, PPP, HDLC, DSL connections
- Troubleshoot, place service calls and expedite resolution of all circuit issues with status reports to affected users
- Manage migration from one WAN vendor to another
Wireless LAN (WLAN)
- Perform site survey to assure proper wireless coverage
- Order, configure, install Cisco Aironet AIR-AP1242AG-A-K9 Autonomous Access Points with 802.11A/B/G radios
- Wireless security including WPA2, WPA, WEP
- Wireless encryption including AES-CCMP (WPA2) or TKIP (WPA) encryption
- Guest Wireless LAN accomplished using VLANs, Access Control Lists, Subnetting
Physical Network
- Do site surveys to determining network, phone, cooling, electrical and space requirements
- Select, purchase and install network cabinets
- Manage installation of copper and fiber basic cabling plants for network and phone systems
- Coordinate project tasks with electricians, fiber technicians, hardware vendors and local personnel
- Pull wiring, punch down patch panels and jacks and make custom patch cables
- Operate boom lifts and scissor lifts to install overhead wiring and devices
- Troubleshoot using tone and trace, continuity testers
Physical Security
- Administer Keyscan Access Control System
- Install and administer video surveillance systems
- Administer intercom and door release systems, stand-alone or with phone system interface
- Provide circuits for fire and security alarms
SONET
- Manage Synchronous Optical NETworking (SONET) ring project
- Order SONET from the LEC to provide high-speed access to CLECs
- Ensure high availability by planning route diversity (separate building entrances and physical inside routes)
- Oversee physical planning, hardware installation and configuration
- Oversee separation of OC-3 circuit into DS3 and DS3 into DS1 circuits
- Assign channels for PRI and T1 circuits and place orders for circuit cross-connect on the customer provided access
- Write Letter of Agency/Facility Release Authorization (LOA) for customer provided access and facility assignment
Network Technologies
- Multilink PPP connections for additional capacity and failover
- GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) tunnels to remote sites, bypassing WAN vendor routing
- Static routing and routing protocols (EIGRP)
- VPN using Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client, or open source OpenVPN implemented on Linux
- Remote configuration using VanDyke SecureCRT, SSH, Telnet and TFTPD32VLAN, WLAN, Guest Wireless LAN, Subnetting, VTP
- Network monitoring using open source Nagios software for ping and SNMP uptime and status monitoring
- Internet Service Provider (ISP) interfaces, Public IP address management
- Ethernet 10/100/1000 over TIA/EIA-568-B UTP structured cabling
- IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE)
- TCP/IP, NetBIOS, switching, spanning tree
